-->Yuna's Question: My a river runs through it's question is from page26, line17.
What is the mean if writer wrote, "She took to the name like a duck to water."
I don't understand the meaning of duck to water.
This is a good question. Yuna's question is about the idiom "to take to something like a duck to water." What do you think this idiom means?
-->Gui, Where is your question!??? Since Gui has not sent me a question, I'd like everyone to response to this question:
What aspect of A River Runs Through It do you enjoy the most so far?
Thanks for writing. Hope you have a good weekend.

Yunna question:
ReplyDeleteIdiom: Like a duck to water
meaning;
If someone has a natural talent for something and enjoys it, they take to it like a duck to water
Question
ReplyDeleteto elaborate with Yunna question
in the story of River Runs through it, there is an expression " The duck dog fashion" whic means how ducks shake their bodies to get ride of water when they want to get out of water.
1) To take something like a duck of water means to learn how to do something very quickly and to enjoy doing it ,so In the story That means she take the name and enjoy to be addressed with it .
ReplyDeleteThanks Yuuna.
2) The aspect of A River Runs Through It that mostly I enjoy is the part of the story when Paul talked with Florence about getting Neal up to go fishing. He talked to hear as he wanted to provoke her by using sharp speech and evoking the Scottish assets. He also implied that she must have a control on her son to keep him without hangover. It seems to me it is a contradiction that he doesn’t want Neal to drink but he just did that last night, and was left in the jail!
thanks Josh
I like mostly the story atmosphere ! what does that implay for me at least is the natural living amongst Montaniess pepole. I like for instance the passage describtion from the continental divid down to the Blackfeet river. I am astonished by the reaction of pepole with natural features especially reivers. No doubt Blackfeet river was a milstone of the story and it's implication for both Norman and Paul and the rest of the family is eminant.
ReplyDeleteOne of the famous movies that I watched on my early days was "The River of no Return " that was the meaning of the Indian name for Arckensas
river if I get it right. The super star of this film is Marlen Moonro. The film is distigushed with a song singed by Marleem. As she singed "Love like travel in the River of no Return" this is what the Indian meant by naming this river that Love has no return.
Hello, Josh.
ReplyDelete1) I guess the meaning of "take to the name like a duck to water" is she became ashamed to be named because I imaged when a duck go to water and thought it's the time when something happen to him suddenly, so he is surprised and go to water. When a duck was astonished, he go to water to hide. I connected this imagination and that sentence, so when she knew the meaning of her name, she was surprised and hid behind name. It means she felt embarrassed about her name.
1) I got another guess.
This sentence means she would get an illegitimate. I suppose she would be a person that her name means because I guess that a duck to a water is normal thing, his routine and his work. I matched the image of duck and the situation which a duck in a water and did same thing, so her surrounding would fit her name.
Do these make sense?
It was hard for me to explain clearly as I couldn't say completely as I want to say..
2)I like the relationship between a main character and his brother because I have an older sister, so I can sometimes know what he or his brother think.
Actually, this book is difficult for me,,,=(
Thank you
Yuuki
